Chef Nicola Hoessly has 15 years’ experience as a chef, with 10 of those years in management roles. With her early childhood spent living in Indonesia, her education and training in New Zealand, and the past ten years living and working in California, her career has been influenced by a diverse range of cultures and cuisine styles. Since arriving in the United States, she has worked as a sous chef at corporate chain restaurant McCormick and Schmick’s, which also helped to further develop her financial knowledge of the business, as well as honing her skills in a large volume operation. For the past seven years she has been the chef and manager at Second City Bistro in El Segundo, where she created all the menus and dishes for in-house dining as well as off-site catering of special occasions, community events and private parties. It is the catering aspect that has become a passion for Nikki.
Jennifer Wood started her hospitality career at Manhattan Beach landmark Orville & Wilbur’s. During her 10 years of employment, she worked in every department of the restaurant eventually becoming general manager. From there she helped to open Soleil restaurant in downtown Manhattan Beach. Here, she developed a strong working relationship with Chef Alex Lombardo and discovered her love of off-site catering and event planning. When Jenny began employment at Second City Bistro, it was apparent that she and Nikki’s similar passion for food, creativity and attention to detail in executing events would be a match made in heaven. Throughout the next seven years there they teamed together, focusing on community, creating menus, great service, food display and décor.
